Child Passenger Safety Week
According to a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHSTA) study, 3 out of 4 children are not as secure in the car as they should be. The NHSTA is trying to change that. Every year, the NHSTA sponsors Child Passenger Safety Week, which runs September 15 through September 21. This week is dedicated to make sure parents and caregivers know how to properly use a child safety seat.
During this week, we encourage caregivers to have their child seats inspected to make sure they are being used correctly. In 2009, PennDOT found eight out of the 10 seats checked at fitting stations were not being used properly. Child safety is important all year round, so we recommend you follow these steps to ensure your children are in properly fitted seats.
- Take your children’s age and size into consideration when finding a car seat.
- Carefully read the car seat manufacturer’s instructions and make sure the car seat is being used properly.
- Keep your child in a booster seat until they can fit in a seat belt correctly.
